About:
My Physio and Tai Chi story
Meet your physio and Tai Chi teacher - Anthony Patruno
For 35 years I grew up in the wonderful physio family at POWH. From new graduate through to being a senior. It was the best place to learn my craft. Such an outstanding, caring capable and professional team.
My teacher and mentor Mr Larry Friedberg from Tai Chi Sydney. Training with me in my early days and now sharing with his knowledge with my Refined Moves students.
My journey as a physio and martial artist started in the early 1980’s whilst studying to be an engineer! A hobby in Kung Fu soon became more than a young man’s passing interest and committed training led to a desire to understand more about the human body, biomechanics, physiology and kinematics. This coupled with a desire to live a life aligned with my faith values and provide service and assistance to others led to a change of focus and study to physiotherapy.
I graduated in physiotherapy from Cumberland College of Health Sciences, Lidcombe in 1989 and commenced my physio career at The Prince of Wales Hospital Randwick, (a large and highly regarded teaching hospital). I soon found my niche area to be adult musculoskeletal physiotherapy and developed my clinical skills here.
I eventually became a physiotherapy educator in adult musculoskeletal physiotherapy and over 30 years trained and mentored over 1,000 student physiotherapists from most of the key university physiotherapy schools in NSW (University of Sydney, Charles Sturt University, Newcastle University, Macquarie University, Australian Catholic University, University of Technology Sydney and Griffith University).
Being an educator led me to become involved as a pre-registration examiner for the assessment of overseas trained physiotherapists with ACOP/APC for 15 years.
I am registered with Ahpra. Registration number: PHY0001151532
I am also a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association.
A practice refined over time..
“I teach because I love teaching. We are on this earth to share our skills and knowledge so that we are all able to live our lives optimally and leave the world a better place. I have taught and mentored thousands of physiotherapists, patients and martial arts students. I am patient, kind and easy to connect with. Teaching is a thing that I know I do well. It is in every fibre of my being to teach and to share. It just feels right. It is in my heart and soul….”
The east-west journey…
All through my adult life my passion and interest in martial arts has remained strong. I have studied and taught Kung Fu, Japanese JuJutsu, Kenjutsu, Aikido, Tai Chi and Qigong. And have achieved more than one black belt during 40 years of training (everyone wants to know if you have a black belt!). My physiotherapy empowers my martial arts understanding and teaching. Each martial art form informs and empowers every other martial art form I practice and teach. And all my martial arts skills and insights have refined my hands-on physiotherapy technique and exercise prescription insight.
The result …
Forty wonderful years of study, work, service, learning, sharing and growth, has delivered a well-balanced, happy, healthy, warm and compassionate fusion of skill, insight and knowledge.
Giving back to communities
True wealth is not the accumulation of money nor is it the achievement of great commercial success. True wealth is knowing that you have used your life and your time well, and developed yourself as best you can. It’s living well and doing the best with what you have been given. It’s living to do good for your family, others, your community and your world. It’s consistently living in a loving, compassionate and deliberate way with integrity and purpose.
In addition to running Refined Moves and spending time with my family, I give back to my community by volunteering at:
- Bowral Vinnies
- Vinnies Creative Space (as a Tai Chi/Qigong teacher)
- Corpus Christi Church Bowral (as a musician)
-Mittagong PCYC Rise Up Program (as a Tai Chi/Qigong teacher)
